An introduction to Fibromyalgia: a complex and often mis-understood condition By Dr Michelle Woolhouse
Fibromyalgia, a complex and often misunderstood condition, is characterized by chronic systemic inflammation and neuroinflammation. These underlying factors contribute significantly to the array of symptoms experienced by fibromyalgia patients. Investigating the root causes of this condition involves delving into various facets of health and lifestyle, from vitamin-D status to underlying psychological factors.
Fibromyalgia is often not the only issue a person faces, as it is likely they suffer from concurrent issues like gut dysbiosis, IBS, inflammation and mental health issues. Microbial balance within the gut microbiome plays a crucial role, as conditions like leaky gut and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can contribute to systemic inflammation, ultimately impacting mitochondrial function and leading to peripheral pain.
Issues such as oxidative stress, a kind of chemical/physical marker of stress, further exacerbates fibromyalgia symptoms, highlighting the importance of addressing anti-oxidant levels and reducing oxidative load from both internal and external sources. Interestingly, central sensitization, is a hallmark of fibromyalgia, which results in heightened sensitivity to pain stimuli. This hypersensitivity is associated with the activation of mast cells (peripherally) and glial cells (brain), as well as long-term changes in nervous system signalling. Treatment of central sensitization is essential, however it can be challenging and may take years to reverse these neurological changes.
Therapeutic considerations for fibromyalgia management include nutritional interventions, such as probiotics, vitamin-D supplementation, anti-oxidant support, and melatonin. Lifestyle modifications focusing on psychological health, stress reduction, deep emotional transformation and identifying triggers are also essential aspects of treatment.
